●特集１：本土防空！高空を侵入するB-29を撃墜せよ！日本海軍夜間戦闘機

太平洋戦争緒戦期、南太平洋の最前線・ラバウルに於いて、B-17の夜間爆撃に対抗出来る手段が無かった日本海軍。これに対するため、現地提案のあった「斜め銃」を搭載した二式陸上偵察機（のちの月光）を急遽投入した。これが一定の戦果を挙げたことで「斜め銃」の株は一気に上がった。これをきっかけに「斜め銃」付き二式陸偵は正式採用され、「月光」と命名された。これが、日本海軍における夜間戦闘機の誕生であった。その後、戦況の悪化で新型の夜間戦闘機開発は遅々として進まなかったが、既存の機体に「斜め銃」を搭載した応急改造の夜間戦闘機が作られたのだが‥‥。

Feature 1: Homeland Air Defense! Shoot Down the High-Altitude B-29s!
Imperial Japanese Navy Night Fighters

In the early stages of the Pacific War, the Imperial Japanese Navy found itself defenseless against nighttime B-17 bombing raids over Rabaul, the front line of the South Pacific. To counter this threat, an urgent field proposal led to the installation of upward-firing cannons—known as “Schräge Musik”—on the Type 2 Land-Based Reconnaissance Aircraft, later designated the Gekko. This improvised solution achieved notable success, rapidly proving the effectiveness of upward-firing armament.

As a result, the modified aircraft was officially adopted and named Gekko, marking the birth of the Imperial Japanese Navy’s dedicated night fighter force. Although the worsening war situation delayed the development of purpose-built night fighters, a number of emergency conversions were produced by fitting existing aircraft with upward-firing guns—each representing Japan’s desperate efforts to defend the homeland from high-altitude bomber attacks.
