特集：イギリス空軍・四発重爆撃機　アブロ・ランカスター

第２次大戦のイギリスの傑作機と言えば、スピットファイア、モスキート、アブロ・ランカスターの３機種が挙げられる。この３機種の共通点といえば…ロールス・ロイス「マーリン」エンジンである。中型爆撃機の開発に注力していた第２次大戦前のイギリスでは、高出力を謳った「ヴァルチャー」エンジンを双発装備したアブロ・マンチェスターを開発、配備していたが、このエンジンの欠陥が露呈し、200機ほど生産されただけで運用停止となってしまった。そんな折に出来上がったのがロールス・ロイス社の名機、マーリンエンジンである。マンチェスター自体の機体設計は非常に優れていたので、このマーリンエンジン搭載前提の改造計画が提案された。エンジン４基が搭載出来る大型主翼、胴体中央部を延長し、機体全長の半分近い巨大な爆弾倉を設置したその機体は「マンチェスターⅢ」として試験飛行を実施。マンチェスターとは比較にならない高性能を発揮し、すぐさま「重爆撃機ランカスター」として量産。ドイツへの夜間爆撃をはじめ、機雷敷設、ダム破壊、Ｕボート・ブンカー破壊、戦艦「ティルピッツ」撃沈などの特殊任務でも活躍したことは周知のとおりだ。それらも、グランドスラムやトールボーイ、ブロックバスター、アップキープなど、大型／特殊爆弾も搭載可能なランカスターの巨大な爆弾倉があって成せる業であった。飛行機模型スペシャルNo.29では、この「アブロ・ランカスター」を大特集。傑作機ゆえにランカスターのプラモデルキットは昔から多数リリースされていますが、今回は往年の傑作キットと比較的近年に発売されたキットをメインに作例紹介します。

Feature: Royal Air Force Four-Engine Heavy Bomber – Avro Lancaster

When speaking of British masterpieces of World War II, three aircraft inevitably come to mind: the Spitfire, the Mosquito, and the Avro Lancaster. What these three have in common is the Rolls-Royce “Merlin” engine.
Before World War II, Britain focused on developing medium bombers and introduced the Avro Manchester, a twin-engine aircraft powered by the high-output Rolls-Royce Vulture. However, serious flaws in the Vulture engine soon became apparent, and after only about 200 aircraft were produced, the type was withdrawn from service. Around this time, Rolls-Royce completed what would become one of its greatest engines—the Merlin.

The basic airframe design of the Manchester itself was highly regarded, and a conversion plan based on fitting Merlin engines was proposed. Featuring a large wing capable of mounting four engines, an extended center fuselage, and an enormous bomb bay occupying nearly half the aircraft’s length, the prototype flew under the designation “Manchester III.” Its performance far surpassed that of the original Manchester, and it was quickly approved for mass production as the heavy bomber Lancaster.

The Lancaster went on to play a central role in nighttime bombing raids over Germany, as well as a wide range of special missions including minelaying, dam-busting operations, attacks on U-boat pens, and the sinking of the battleship Tirpitz. These achievements were made possible by the Lancaster’s vast bomb bay, capable of carrying large and specialized weapons such as the Grand Slam, Tallboy, Blockbuster, and Upkeep bombs.

Aircraft Model Special No.29 is devoted entirely to the Avro Lancaster. As a true classic, the Lancaster has been represented by numerous plastic model kits over the decades. In this issue, we focus on featured builds using both renowned classic kits and models released in more recent years.
