Aircraft Model Special No.25

Feature: Imperial Japanese Army – The Defense of the Imperial Capital

After the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, the United States secured the Mariana Islands and rapidly constructed air bases on Guam and Saipan. From November of that year, the latest long-range strategic bomber, the B-29 Superfortress, was deployed, and full-scale air raids were launched against Japan, concentrating on the six major cities of Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe.
It is often said that Japanese fighters tasked with homeland air defense were powerless against the B-29s, which cruised calmly at high altitude and high speed. In reality, however, only reconnaissance B-29s (designated F-13) routinely operated above 10,000 meters. High-altitude bombing proved insufficiently accurate, so daytime bombing missions were generally conducted below 10,000 meters, while nighttime raids were carried out at even lower altitudes.

With the appearance of the B-29, the Imperial Japanese Army¡Çs air defense organization was strengthened. In addition to existing fighters such as the Type 2 Fighter Shoki (Ki-44), the Type 2 Twin-Engine Fighter Toryu (Ki-45), and the Type 3 Fighter Hien (Ki-61), newer aircraft were introduced, including the Type 4 Fighter Hayate (Ki-84), the Type 5 Fighter (Ki-100), and the Army¡Çs fastest aircraft, the Type 100 Command Reconnaissance Aircraft (Ki-46).

In the next issue, Aircraft Model Special No.25, marking the release of Zoukei-Mura¡Çs 1/32 scale Ki-45 Toryu, we focus on the Imperial Japanese Army homeland defense units that fought in unity with their aircraft to defend their country—placing particular emphasis on the air defense battles over the Imperial Capital.
